How to get a YouTube video taken down: pick the route by reason
Most removal attempts fail because the request went through the wrong form, not because too few people complained. This guide matches each reason to the YouTube or Google form that can act on it.
How to get a YouTube video taken down depends on your reason: use the copyright removal webform if you own the work, a privacy complaint if you are identifiable in it, Google's legal form for defamation or trademark, or a Community Guidelines report. Report counts do not decide removal; a reviewer checks the video against one policy.
Why a pile of reports never decides it
Zero reports decide it, in the sense that matters. YouTube's own help page on flagging says that when content is reported, "it's not automatically taken down" (YouTube Help on reporting videos and channels). Each flag puts the video in a review queue, where it is checked against one written policy. So the question people keep typing, how many reports to get a YouTube video taken down, has no number behind it: one accurate report naming the right policy beats five hundred vague ones, and if the reviewer finds no violation the video stays up however many people pressed Report.
That is also why the threads you find when you search how to get a youtube video taken down reddit tend to disappoint. Rallying friends to flag a clip pulls the wrong lever, and YouTube warns that misusing its reporting and legal tools can end in account termination for the people who do it. The same myth drives the paid tools we have looked at elsewhere: why a mass report on an Instagram account rarely works, what TikTok mass report bots actually sell and reporting Instagram spam bots by hand instead of by script.
Report history, on a computer, shows what became of your own flags.
Four doors, and which reason opens each one
YouTube sorts removal requests by who is harmed and how, and the wrong door is the most common reason a valid complaint goes nowhere. A copyright form filed by someone who does not own the footage gets rejected. A Community Guidelines flag about a false, damaging claim usually comes back as no violation, because defamation is a legal question that flag reviewers do not rule on.
| Your reason | Route | Who can file | What usually follows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your music, footage or artwork was used | Copyright removal request in YouTube Studio | The rights holder or an authorized agent | Removal if the request is complete and valid; a copyright strike unless the removal was scheduled |
| You are identifiable and did not consent | Privacy complaint | The person shown; close family or a legal representative if that person has died | The uploader may get time to edit; then YouTube reviews |
| False statements, trademark misuse, a court order | Google legal removal request | The affected person or business, or their lawyer | Review under local law, often limited to one country |
| Harassment, scams, sexual or violent content, impersonation | Report button (Community Guidelines) | Any signed-in viewer | Removal, an age restriction, or nothing |
If you ask YouTube to take down a video for a reason it can only judge under national law, plan for a result scoped to that country rather than a worldwide removal.
The copyright route, filed properly
Only the copyright owner, or someone authorized to act for them, can file. A YouTube take down notice is a legal statement made under penalty of perjury, which is why YouTube wants a full legal name as the signature rather than a company name.
Open Content detection in YouTube Studio
Select New removal request. The webform is the quickest path; email to copyright@youtube.com, fax and post are accepted too, mostly for things like banner images.
Name the work and every URL
One allegation per request, each with the exact watch link. YouTube will not accept a request for an entire channel or playlist.
Pick the timing
A scheduled removal takes effect in 7 days, giving the uploader a chance to delete the video and avoid a strike. A standard request asks YouTube to act as soon as it has reviewed.
Tick the option to prevent copies
Where it is offered, it asks YouTube to block later uploads of the same content.
Sign, submit and watch your inbox
If something is missing, YouTube writes back and the video may stay up meanwhile. The uploader can see your name and the description of the work; your address and phone number stay private unless a lawsuit calls for them.
When we filed our first YouTube copyright requests for clients, the rule that surprised them most was the channel one, and it still held when we checked the removal page again in October 2026: you cannot use a copyright request to take down a YouTube channel, only its individual videos. Strikes handle the rest. According to YouTube's copyright strike basics, channels with 3 copyright strikes in 90 days are subject to termination, and a strike expires after 90 days once the uploader completes Copyright School, a four-question course. The uploader can also send a counter notification; under US law the video can come back if the claimant does not show, within about 10 business days, that it has filed a court action.
Is it your face, your name or your address on screen?
Then the privacy complaint is usually the faster door. Before the form even opens, YouTube asks you to confirm that you are uniquely identifiable in the content, by your image, voice, full name, contact details or something similar. A blurred figure in a crowd shot normally does not qualify.
What follows is not an instant removal. Under its privacy guidelines, YouTube may email the uploader and give them time to cut or blur the private part; if they do, the complaint closes. If the information stays, YouTube reviews it and weighs public interest, newsworthiness, consent and whether the details are already public. This is the right way to request YouTube to take down a video that shows your home address, your children or a recording made of you without your knowledge.
Can you get someone's channel or account taken down?
Sometimes, though rarely in a single step. To report a whole channel, open its About panel and choose Report user; reviewers then look at the videos, name, avatar and links together. That fits impersonation, a channel built to run scams, or one that exists to harass a person. A channel that posts one rude video about you is a video problem, and the video routes above are where to start.
YouTube also terminates channels on its own: three Community Guidelines strikes within 90 days, three copyright strikes in 90 days, or one severe violation. So the honest answer to how to get someone's YouTube channel taken down, or how to get a YouTube account taken down, is to document each violation accurately and let the strikes follow. We apply that same test on other platforms, as in the checks we run on Instagram ban requests, which TikTok account cases qualify for a ban request and channel versus account takedowns on Telegram. On X the test is identical, as our walkthrough of the report route for a rule-breaking X account and our checklist for vetting a paid X removal agency before you pay both show.
Taking down your own video, Short or old channel
Your own uploads never need a form. In YouTube Studio, open Content, use the three-dot menu on the video and choose Delete forever. A YouTube Short works the same way from the Shorts tab of that list. Deleting is final: views, comments and the link all go.
| Option | Who can still see it | Reversible | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete forever | Nobody | No | You want the video gone for good |
| Private | You and people you invite | Yes | You may want it back later |
| Unlisted | Anyone holding the link | Yes | It should leave your channel page but keep working where it was shared |
| Hide channel | Nobody until you re-enable it | Yes | An old channel should go quiet for now |
| Permanently delete content | Nobody | No | You want to take down your YouTube channel for good |
To take down an old YouTube channel, go to Settings, then Channel, then Advanced settings, and select Remove YouTube Content; there you pick "hide my channel" or "permanently delete my content". It cannot be done from a phone, and deleting the channel leaves the Google Account in place. If you lost the login years ago, recover that Google Account first, since no form lets a stranger delete a channel they cannot show they own.
Why did YouTube take down my video, even a private one?
Because the rules cover every upload, whatever its visibility. Private and unlisted videos sit on YouTube's servers under the same Community Guidelines and copyright rules as public ones, and either can be removed after a valid copyright request, a privacy complaint or automated detection. Unlisted links get forwarded, which is how they end up reported.
Does YouTube take down videos with copyrighted music?
Mostly it claims them rather than removing them. A Content ID match is a claim, not a takedown: the owner chooses block, monetize or track, and YouTube's Content ID help page says monetize is the most common choice for music. A claim carries no strike. A strike comes from a formal removal request, and disputing a claim without a valid reason can provoke exactly that.
A few habits keep a video from being taken down on YouTube:
- Use tracks from the YouTube Audio Library, or music you hold a license for and can show.
- Blur faces and number plates of people who did not agree to appear.
- Read the notice in YouTube Studio; it names the policy, and that policy is what any appeal has to answer.
- Appeal once with specifics instead of re-uploading, because putting removed content back up is its own violation.
Can you still watch YouTube videos that were taken down?
Usually not, and we will not point you to download sites that claim otherwise. Videos that have been taken down are gone from YouTube's player, and nobody can see them there. The one legitimate place to look is the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine: paste the old watch URL and check for a capture. Captures often keep the title, description and channel name, which helps you find which video it was; the clip itself rarely plays, and anything removed before a crawl was never saved.
Mirror copies on other channels are often the very re-uploads a rights holder is trying to remove, so people who view taken down YouTube videos through rip sites can land on the wrong side of the same copyright rules. If the deleted video was your own, look in your device, cloud backups or an older Google Takeout export.
Searches that share these words but mean something else
Plenty of searches with take down and YouTube in them are not about removal at all. Someone typing youtube take me down usually wants a song: Alabama's "Take Me Down", the track of the same name by The Pretty Reckless, Chris Brown's "Take You Down", or Little Big Town's "Little White Church", whose chorus asks to be taken down to the little white church. Home searches such as how to take down blinds with hidden brackets want a tutorial, and so do the clips on how to take down a drone with lasers.
Two oddities finish the list. Project Zorgo is the fictional hacker group in Chad Wild Clay and Vy Qwaint's Spy Ninjas videos; it never took YouTube down, because it is a storyline. And YouTube never took down the rick roll: NPR reported that Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" passed 1 billion views in July 2021, and it is still up.
Where to start today
Decide which harm you can prove before you click anything. If you own the work, file the copyright request from YouTube Studio with every URL listed. If you are recognizable in the video, use the privacy complaint. For false statements, go to Google's legal removal form, ideally with a lawyer. Skip the flag campaign entirely. If the case is serious and you would rather hand it over, BanService reviews it first and files only for videos and channels that genuinely break YouTube's rules or the law, through these same official forms, with no promise about the outcome; the contact page explains how to send it.

Questions about this guide
Can I get a YouTube video taken down if I don't own the copyright?
Not through the copyright form, which only the rights holder or an authorized agent may use. You can still use the privacy complaint if you are identifiable in the video, Google's legal form for defamation, or a Community Guidelines report for harassment, scams or similar violations.
Can YouTube take down private videos?
Yes. Private videos follow the same Community Guidelines and copyright rules as public ones, so automated detection or a valid copyright request can remove them even though only invited viewers can watch.
Can unlisted YouTube videos be taken down?
Yes. Anyone holding the link can watch and report an unlisted video, and copyright, privacy and Community Guidelines removals all apply to it exactly as they do to a public upload. Unlisted is not hidden. It only keeps the video out of search and off the channel page.
How long does a scheduled copyright removal give the uploader?
7 days. During that window the uploader can delete the video and avoid a copyright strike; if it is still up when the period ends, the removal goes ahead.
How do I ask YouTube to take down a video that shows my home address?
Use the privacy complaint, not the Report button. Confirm you are uniquely identifiable, give the video link and the timestamp, and expect YouTube to give the uploader a chance to blur or cut the part first.
Does deleting my own video remove a copyright strike?
Usually not. YouTube's strike page says deletion does not resolve a strike, except when the claimant scheduled the removal and you deleted the video within the 7 days. Otherwise ask for a retraction, counter-notify, or let the strike expire after 90 days.
Does BanService guarantee a YouTube video gets taken down?
No. YouTube makes every removal decision. BanService checks whether a video or channel genuinely breaks a rule or the law, files through the official form that fits, and declines cases that do not qualify.
